Availability Zone

Availability Zone

Definition

An availability zone (AZ) is a physically isolated data center or group of data centers within a cloud region that has independent power, cooling, and networking. Distributing resources across multiple AZs provides fault tolerance — an AZ failure doesn't take down all replicas.

AZs are the fundamental unit of high availability design in AWS, Azure, and GCP.
