Failover

Failover

Definition

Failover is the automatic or manual switching of traffic from a failed primary system to a standby replica. Automated failover minimizes downtime by detecting failure (via health checks or heartbeats) and rerouting traffic within seconds.

DNS-based failover, database replica promotion, and load balancer health checks are common failover mechanisms in cloud architectures.
