Internet Gateway

Internet Gateway

Definition

An internet gateway is a horizontally scaled, redundant VPC component that enables communication between resources in a VPC and the public internet. It performs network address translation (NAT) for instances with public IP addresses.

Attaching an internet gateway to a VPC and adding a route table entry (0.0.0.0/0 → igw) is required for public subnets to receive inbound internet traffic.
